How the procedure works
The procedure is the same across Poland — only the office and timelines differ
What a residence card is
Step 1 of 5 — sorting out terms before filing anything.
A residence card is your legal status in Poland. Documents are received by the , and one of the first steps after arrival is getting a : without it you can't open an account or sign a contract.
Don't confuse a visa with residence: a visa is entry, while a is the right to live and work. The final decision is made by your regional , and timelines depend on it.
Gather documents
Step 2 of 5 — what to prepare in advance.
The base set is nearly the same everywhere, but the receiving urząd may request extras. Get your PESEL in advance — most applications need it.
The key document is the completed karta pobytu (application). It will be checked, so fill it in without errors — the decision rests with the voivode.
File the wniosek
Step 3 of 5 — the filing itself.
Book ahead: the queue at the urząd can be weeks out. When filing you'll need your PESEL — it's asked at almost every stage.
After documents are accepted you get a karta pobytu and a stamp. The decision then rests with the voivode, and you wait legally with that stamp.
Give fingerprints
Step 4 of 5 — biometrics.
Fingerprints are given in person at the urząd. Bring your passport and booking confirmation; your PESEL may help too.
This is required to issue the karta pobytu. After biometrics the case goes for final review by the voivode.
Get the decision & card
Step 5 of 5 — the finish.
The decision arrives by letter; you can track status via the urząd. To collect the card you'll again need your PESEL.
A positive decision means a ready karta pobytu — issued by the voivode. Collect it in person on the set date.
