Polish citizenship by marriage: 3 years married, 2 years of permanent residence
Marriage alone grants nothing
Let's kill the main myth: marrying a Polish citizen does not make you one — not immediately, not after a year. It shortens the path, but you still have to walk it.
The formula: 3 years of marriage to a Polish citizen plus 2 years of residence under _pobyt stały_ (permanent residence) — then you may apply for recognition as a citizen. Both conditions must hold at the same time when you file.
What gets checked
Besides the timelines, the looks at:
- A Polish language certificate at B1 — state-issued or a Polish university diploma
- A stable and regular source of income
- Legal title to housing
- No threat to national defence or security
If the marriage ends
A divorce before filing means the basis is gone — the marriage route is closed. But your residence doesn't disappear: if you hold permanent residence and have had it for 3 years, you can apply for recognition as a citizen on general grounds.
Widowhood is treated separately and doesn't always break the path — here it's worth seeing a lawyer with the exact dates in hand.
